What is GenAnswers?

GenAnswers is a free genealogy question and answer community web site that allows people to find anwers to their genealogy related questions share their knowledge with other members by answering questions.

How is GenAnswers different from other question and answer sites on the web?

Many question and answer sites simply employ writers to create questions and answers. Gen Answers relies on the input of its members to ask and answer questions. Other question and answer sites have a very broad focus and don’t provide the depth and expertise offered by a focused site like GenAnswers which has a community comprised of members with a passion for genealogy.

Who can post questions and answers?

All the questions and answers are available to everyone on the web to read. To post questions and answers you will need to create an account and login. This helps to reduce spam on the site, and allows you to build a community with other users that have similar interests in genealogy research. The limited information that you provide during the sign-up process will never be sold or shared.

What are the rules for posting questions and answers?

Be nice. The GenAnswers community is comprised of people from a diverse spectrum of beliefs, experience levels, cultures, backgrounds, and ages. Please be respectful in all your interactions with others on the site. There are “Report Abuse” links in the questions and answers. If you come across a post that you find offensive, click the link, and we will review the content for removal.

Ask clear and concise questions. The more clear and concise information that you provide in your questions, the better chance you will get a good answer to your question.

Stay on topic. Please limit your questions and answers to topics genealogy topics. We define the topic very broadly, so don’t be afraid to post questions and answers on any genealogy.

Categorize your question correctly. Categorizing your question correctly helps people with particular knowledge to find and answer your question.

Site and link to your sources. Give the entire community the benefit of learning more by directing them to additional information. If your link adds value please include them, but do not post blatant advertising links.

Don’t cheat the points system. GenAnswers has a system to grant points for actions (posting questions and answers, voting, inviting others to the site, etc) taken on GenAnswers. This point system rewards contributions to the site. Please don’t game the system.

You can't buy anything with your points, but they do allow show everyone how much you have contributed to GenAnswers.
