Question:
What does a beginning genealogy searcher need in terms of genealogy software or web subscriptions?
I'm fairly new to genealogy research.
But a basic question is what does one really need in terms of software or online "genweb" subscriptions to gather and store family records? Something like Family Tree Maker, or just ancestry.com? I rather quickly subscribed to ancestry.com for a year. I guess just because it is so out there in your face now. But I looked at it and thought it seemed to provide a lot of features. I now have quickly added about 700 "relatives" to me in about 2 months!
But then I see lots of talk about Family Tree Maker and similar software that people have been using for some time.
And after reading various websites and message boards and postings....I wondered why does one need software like FTM or similar, if they have something like ancestry.com? And another statement I've read from a few researchers is the one where they say "all the work I've done is on MY comupter and MINE and not for sharing". Why not share? It's just history, isn't it? We all have a past...that many others may want to read about or even check on to see how we are related.

Answers
There are many good genealogy software programs available today. Some, like Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and Legacy, are free. For a beginner I find these are quite adequate.
Once you become more seasoned, however, you'll find you need more in your software -- primarily in the area of documenting your sources. Two very good ones, The Master Genealogist (TMG) and RootsMagic (RM), document the sources quite well and follow the recommended citation rules.
If you join some of the popular genealogy chat groups, you can usually get by without subscribing to any commercial websites. There are plenty of folks who will gladly perform lookups for you.
